Toronto, ON – September 29, 2006 – announced the recipients of the prestigious ARIDO Awards of Excellence today. Seventeen exceptional projects designed by leading Ontario interior designers were recognized during the Awards celebration, which annually honours creativity and professional achievement in the province’s interior design community.
Held on September 28, 2006, at the Direct Energy Centre as part of IIDEX/NeoCon Canada, the Awards ceremony recognized winning projects in nine different categories, including residential; retail spaces; workplaces; health care facilities; public & institutional spaces; restaurants, bars & clubs; restoration & adaptive reuse; special projects; and sustainable design. Of the 17 Awards decided, there were three Awards of Excellence, 12 Awards of Merit, one Commitment to the Environment Award and a coveted Project of the Year.
“Once again, it has been an exceptional year for the ARIDO Awards of Excellence,” says Lynn McGregor, president of ARIDO. “We are so pleased to see the public grow increasingly aware of the power of design, and the role it can play in achieving both personal and business objectives. Our award winners this year have succeeded in harnessing this power, to the delight of their clients and to the delight of all who get to experience these spaces.”
Residential work received accolades at the Awards, with design firm Powell & Bonnell wowing judges and receiving an Award of Excellence and Project of the Year for its 1857 Historic Mill project, which transformed a historical grist mill into a weekend retreat. Falling under the restoration & adaptive reuse category, the unique project features simplified finishes and indigenous materials to maintain the integrity of the building’s history.
It was also an impressive year for green design, as HOK, the international firm with a penchant for sustainable designand architecture, won the Commitment to the Environment Award for its landmark HOK Toronto Studio project.
The Studio earned LEED-CI Gold one year after it was built.
